Ingredients

  • 1 medium ripe pear
  • 2-3 tbsp water (optional)

Method

  1. 1

Wash the pear thoroughly under running water to remove any dirt or residue.

Choose a ripe pear that yields slightly to gentle pressure for easier mashing and natural sweetness.

  2. 2

Peel the pear with a vegetable peeler or knife, then cut it in half and remove the core and seeds.

Discard the core and seeds as they can be choking hazards and contain trace amounts of cyanide compounds.

  3. 3

Chop the pear into small, even pieces (about 1-inch cubes) to ensure even cooking.

Smaller pieces cook faster and blend more smoothly, saving time and effort.

  4. 4

Place the pear pieces in a small saucepan and add 2-3 tablespoons of water to prevent sticking.

Use just enough water to cover the bottom of the pan; steaming helps retain nutrients better than boiling.

  5. 5

Cover the saucepan and cook over medium-low heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pear is soft and easily pierced with a fork.

Check frequently to avoid overcooking, which can reduce nutrient content and make the puree watery.

  6. 6

Remove from heat and let cool slightly, then transfer the cooked pear and any remaining liquid to a blender or food processor.

Cooling for a few minutes prevents steam burns and makes blending safer.

  7. 7

Blend until smooth, adding a little extra water if needed to reach your desired consistency for your baby's age.

For younger babies (6-7 months), blend to a very smooth puree; for older babies (8+ months), leave it slightly chunkier to encourage chewing.

  8. 8

Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freezer for up to 3 months.

Freeze in ice cube trays for convenient portion sizes, and always check temperature before serving to avoid burns.
