Simple Mashed Potatoes for Babies
A classic and nutritious first food for babies, made with just potatoes and optional breast milk or formula for added creaminess. This recipe is gentle on baby's developing digestive system and provides essential carbohydrates and vitamins. Perfect for introducing solids around 6 months, with tips to adjust texture as baby grows.

Ingredients
- 2 medium potatoes
- 2-3 tbsp breast milk or formula (optional)
Method
- 1
Peel the potatoes and cut them into 1-inch cubes for even cooking.
Choose russet or Yukon gold potatoes for a smooth texture; avoid waxy varieties like red potatoes which may not mash as well.
- 2
Place the potato cubes in a pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to medium and simmer for 15-20 minutes until tender when pierced with a fork.
Do not add salt to the water, as babies under 12 months should avoid added sodium.
- 3
Drain the potatoes thoroughly in a colander, then return them to the pot.
Let the potatoes sit in the colander for a minute to steam off excess moisture, which helps prevent a watery mash.
- 4
Mash the potatoes with a potato masher until smooth and fluffy. For younger babies (6-7 months), mash until completely smooth; for older babies (8+ months), leave slightly chunky to encourage texture exploration.
Avoid using a food processor or blender, as this can make the potatoes sticky and gummy—a potato masher gives the best texture.
- 5
If using, stir in breast milk or formula 1 tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. Serve warm.
